There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple trading ship required around 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to this speedy automated saw, that converted logs into planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted the rotary movement into up-and-down action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element was modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate them in order that they acted within a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward stroke and advancing with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
