Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
